An effective way to develop opportunities for foot sweeps is to take a high collar grip with your left hand and a grip on your opponents left sleeve with your right hand. Often a right-handed player will stand with his right foot forward (conversely it is normal for someone using a left handed grip to lead with his left foot). If you make sure that your left foot is outside Uki's right foot in this position your foot should most likely be three to four inches away from Uki's foot. Now step across Uki's body with your right foot as though you are going for a left side O Soto Gari but do not break his Kuzushi. He will react like he is going to be thrown to his left rear and will lean to his right front to counter-act the attack. When you feel his weight come forward sweep both feet with your left foot which has not moved until now and score your Ippon.

The coach's corner is going to be dedicated mostly to counter techniques and combinations.

This time the combo is a right sided O uchi gari that is followed up with an Okuri ashi harai. The time it is used is when you attempt an O uchi gari with your right leg and your opponent steps back and over your leg with his left foot to avoid the reap. As he places his left foot back on the mat his right foot will slide back under his body to regain his balance. As that right foot starts to slide he is vulnerable and can be caught with a Okuri ashi harai with your left foot. Try to sweep uki's right foot into his left foot and take both feet off the mat.

The way to avoid having to use this combination is to put Uki's weight on his left foot before you try to sweep it in the first place. With his weight planted on that foot your O uchi gari should work and not need a follow up technique.
